How to choose a construction company for your project

Start with the project and location

A new build, structural alteration, renovation and small repair call for different experience. Describe the property, city and work you need, then check that a listed company handles that type of project and serves the site. A construction category alone does not confirm every trade or service.

Compare written scopes, not just totals

Ask each contractor to price the same drawings or project brief. The quote should explain materials, labor, site preparation, waste removal, exclusions, allowances and the process for approving changes. Confirm who coordinates specialist trades and who will supervise the work.

Confirm the requirements for your job

Ask about the licenses, insurance and permits relevant to your location and project, and verify details with the issuing authority where applicable. Request examples of similar completed work and references. A directory listing or stored star rating does not independently verify credentials.

Agree the schedule and payment terms

Before work begins, get the start date, expected milestones, payment stages and change-order process in writing. Discuss site access, occupied areas and cleanup. Confirm how delays and questions will be handled and what documentation you receive at completion.
