HVAC ONLY: Oversized Furnace Installation, No Load Calc, 10+ Years of Short-Cycling If you're considering A-1 for HVAC work, read this carefully. I cannot speak to their plumbing or electrical services, but their furnace installation has cost me over a decade of problems. I know this review is late and may not be a reflection of their company now, but please follow the advice below carefully. THE INSTALLATION (2012-2014): The previous owner had A-1 install a forced-air furnace. I discovered the following issues: 1. 54,000 BTU output furnace installed in 1,100 sq ft home Properly sized furnace for this space: 38,000-40,000 BTU (their unit is 35-40% oversized) 2. No Manual J load calculation performed (industry standard for proper sizing) 3. Temperature rise never verified on installation 4. System cannot handle filters above MERV 1 rating without overheating THE PROBLEMS (2014-2025): For over 10 years, I've dealt with textbook oversizing issues: 1. Constant short-cycling: Average 7-minute runtime even in teens weather (should be 15-20+ minutes) 2. Poor efficiency due to startup/shutdown waste 3. Inability to use proper air filtration (cant run more than a MERV 1 without furnace overheating 4. Uneven heating throughout home 5. Extremely dry conditions I've documented this with data logs showing the exact cycle times and temperatures. This is not subjective - it's measurable equipment failure due to improper sizing. MY ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE (~2021): I had A-1 out approximately 5 years ago to troubleshoot the short-cycling. Rather than acknowledge the oversizing issue their company created, the technician tried to upsell me on a complete system replacement. No mention of the installation errors. No offer to make it right. THE OUTCOME: After 5+ years of living with A-1's installation mistakes, I'm removing the forced-air system entirely and switching to radiant hydronic heating. WHAT WENT WRONG: This wasn't bad luck or normal wear. This was skipping critical installation steps: 1. No Manual J heat load calculation (determines proper equipment size) 2. No temperature rise verification (ensures safe, efficient operation) 3. Oversizing by 35-40% (appropriate for 1,400+ sq ft, not 1,100 sq ft) FOR FUTURE CUSTOMERS: If you're considering A-1 for HVAC installation: 1. Demand a Manual J load calculation before they quote equipment (you'd be surprised to see how most homes are extremely oversized, causing a huge waste in Natural Gas in my case) 2. Verify temperature rise will be checked after installation with middle grade filters (MERV 5) 3. Get the sizing justified in writing 4. Don't accept "bigger is better" - oversizing causes the exact problems I experienced A-1 may do fine work in plumbing and electrical (I don't know), but this HVAC installation has been a 10+ year lesson in what happens when industry standards are skipped. I gave them the opportunity to address it 5 years ago. They chose to sell rather than solve. Attached: Performance data showing 7-minute heating cycles and constant short-cycling over the monitored period. Response to A-1: Critical errors in your reply: 1. Load Calculation: For 1,100 sq ft, proper sizing is 38,000-40,000 BTU output. You installed 54,000 BTU output = 35% oversized, not "20%" as you claim. 2. Temperature Rise: Ignored completely. Furnace runs 1.5-2°F below max temp rise even with MERV 1 filter and clean coil. Can't handle MERV 2-11 without high limit trip. 3. "One Visit": When I called about my furnace overheating, your tech blamed "dirty coil/cheap filter" then tried selling me new AC and coil instead of addressing the furnace issue. I recognized the upsell and ended service. That's why there was only one visit. 4. Data After I Cleaned Coil: 7 cycles in 4 hours (teens weather), 7-min average runtime (should be 15-20+). Chart attached. Textbook short-cycling from oversizing. 5. "Smallest Available": Why jump from 44K to 66K input when 50K furnaces existed? That's a 50% increase when 50K would've been perfect. 6. Longer Cycles ARE Correct: You have HVAC fundamentals backward. Price assessment Not sure Services Service not listed

The tech Kyler arrived during the stated timeframe and got straight to work once the issue was explained. Though a fix for the problem was basically not available, he did suggest an option that will hopefully take care if it.
